Reply to a WhatsApp group with n8n

When a group message arrives, reply ‘Received’ once and email three people using your own workflow.

1. Prepare WhatsApp and credentials

Link your personal WhatsApp, select the group in What's saved and create a key with read, send and group permissions (keys are on the Max plan). Copy the exact group JID from list_groups. Emails are sent by your own n8n email connection. A personal WhatsApp number can send 50 messages a day through the API.

2. Create the webhook trigger

Create a Webhook node using POST and its production URL. Publish the workflow so the production URL is listening. Add that URL in WhatSync Developers and select message.received. Verify the signature at your receiving endpoint using the raw body before trusting the event; if your workflow platform cannot verify raw signed bodies, put the verification code from the webhook guide in a small receiver in front of it. Use a test event to verify connectivity; it is deliberately filtered out of the reply flow.

3. Filter the intended group

type == "message.received"
data.message.chat_type == "group"
data.message.group.id == "YOUR_GROUP_JID"
data.message.from_me == false

Deduplicate event IDs in persistent storage before sending emails. The API idempotency key prevents duplicate WhatsApp replies; it does not deduplicate your email step.

4. Send the reply

Add an HTTP Request node: POST https://whatsync.app/api/v1/tools/send_group_message. Configure Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY, Content-Type: application/json and Idempotency-Key mapped from the incoming event id.

{"jid":"YOUR_GROUP_JID","text":"Received"}

Map jid from data.message.group.id. Inspect the tool response before retrying; an uncertain outcome must not be retried with a new key.

5. Send your email

Add your email action after the reply step. Choose the three recipients yourself and map the incoming message text into the email. In n8n, the Send Email node accepts comma-separated recipient addresses; configure an SMTP credential. The reply creates message.sent and does not re-trigger this flow. Trigger one group message and inspect the webhook log, one reply and your email delivery separately. n8n email configuration

Download the n8n starter workflow

The downloadable starter keeps the workflow inactive and requires your group JID and Header Auth credential. Add signature verification and persistent event deduplication before activating it. In the n8n starter, configure SMTP and the three recipients, then enable the included email node.
