Meta's WhatsApp Business Tools MCP, explained

Meta's official WhatsApp MCP is built for developers. Here is what it does, what you need first, and what it does not do.

By . WhatSync publishes this article and is one of the options covered.

The quick answer

A developer building on the WhatsApp Business API? Add it. Your coding agent can do the setup for you.

Not a developer? Skip it. It sets things up for code you write. It does not give you an inbox.

Want your AI to read and send WhatsApp messages? Use a server built for that, like WhatSync.

What is it?

It is Meta's own MCP server for the WhatsApp Business Platform. Meta launched it in beta on September 15, 2026.

Its docs are clear about who it is for: developers building on the platform. It lets a coding agent like Claude Code, Codex or ChatGPT do the setup you would otherwise click through in Meta's dashboards.

What do you need before it works?

  • Admin access to a business in Meta.
  • Admin access to a Meta developer app with WhatsApp added, connected to that business.
  • Meta's WhatsApp Business Cloud API terms, accepted. Until then it cannot register numbers or send.
  • A Meta developer account to sign in with.

What can it do?

  • List your businesses, WhatsApp accounts and phone numbers.
  • Add a number, verify it and register it. You still type the code Meta sends.
  • Create, edit, list and delete message templates.
  • Point webhooks at your callback URL and subscribe accounts to them.
  • Set up payments, start business verification, and create access tokens for your own code.
  • Send a text inside the 24 hour reply window, or an approved template, from a registered number.

What does it not do?

It does not give you an inbox. The webhooks need a server of yours at the other end, and the tokens need code of yours to use them.

It does not read your customers' messages, and it does not work with personal WhatsApp. It is rate limited and in beta, so the tools may change and your account may not have it yet.

None of that is a flaw. It is a setup tool, and a good one. It turns an afternoon of forms into a conversation.

What should you use for the daily work?

Once your number is live, the daily work starts: replies coming in, templates going out to customers who opted in.

That is what WhatSync does. Connect the number you already use in the WhatsApp Business app, and Claude, ChatGPT or any AI agent can read replies, send approved templates, estimate Meta's price before a campaign, and stop a campaign at a cap you set.

It works with personal WhatsApp too, so one AI sees both your own chats and your business number.

Questions

Is the WhatsApp Business Tools MCP free?
Meta has not announced a price. Messages you send through the Business API are still charged by Meta, per message, by country.
Do I need to be a developer to use it?
In practice, yes. You need a Meta developer app with WhatsApp added and admin access, and what it sets up is meant for code you write.
Does Meta's WhatsApp MCP work with personal WhatsApp?
No. It only works with the WhatsApp Business Platform. To use personal WhatsApp with Claude, ChatGPT or any AI agent, use a server like WhatSync.
Can it read my customers' messages?
No. It can point webhooks at your server, but receiving and keeping the conversations is up to that server.
Which AI apps can use it?
Meta's docs list Claude Code, Claude Desktop, the Codex app, ChatGPT, and any app that supports remote MCP servers. It is rolling out gradually, so your account may not have it yet.
