WhatSync vs Make for WhatsApp and Attio

WhatSync starts from the desired state: WhatsApp history on the right Attio person, with optional sending, inbox, and AI search features. Make starts from modules: watch an event, retrieve data, transform it, search Attio, branch on the result, then create or update the right record.

Neither approach is universally better. A standard workflow benefits from a product that has already made the boring decisions. A genuinely unusual workflow benefits from a canvas where every decision is yours.

Make's WhatsApp Business Cloud app includes event watching, message and template sending, media upload and download, and sender-management modules. Its Attio app can watch entries and search, create, or update people, companies, lists, attributes, and entries. Routers, filters, transformations, error handlers, and thousands of other apps can sit between them.

That is ideal when the workflow must inspect message content, branch by region, enrich a contact, update several systems, wait for approval, and then send a governed response. WhatSync does not aim to be a canvas for arbitrary business logic.

WhatSync removes the need to design a message database on top of Attio. Contact matching, formatted notes, continuous history, and user-facing controls are part of the product. It also offers a QR route for an existing WhatsApp number, while Make's native connector is for WhatsApp Business Cloud.

For a sales team, the invisible work matters: users do not need access to a scenario editor, and a founder does not need to inspect failed executions to know whether a client message reached the CRM. The trade-off is that the workflow follows WhatSync's product model rather than any model you can draw.

Make's Core plan currently starts at $12 per month for 10,000 credits. Most module actions consume one credit: reading, searching, creating, updating, transforming, iterating, and aggregating can each count. A scenario that uses five modules for one inbound message can therefore consume roughly five credits before retries or branches.

That does not make Make expensive. It means the price follows architecture and volume. Map one week of real messages through the proposed scenario, include errors and media, and calculate the expected credits. Compare that with WhatSync's per-user price and the time required to maintain the build.

A Make scenario can be transparent: every module, mapping, filter, and execution is visible. That is excellent when someone is responsible for it. It becomes fragile when the person who built it leaves and no one understands why a phone-normalisation branch exists.

A vertical product hides more implementation detail but gives the vendor responsibility for the common path. Ask who will investigate a missing message at 9 a.m. on Monday. The honest answer often decides between Make and WhatSync faster than a feature matrix.

Use WhatSync for canonical conversation history and Make for exceptional workflows. A Make scenario might enrich a newly created Attio person or route a deal event to another system, while WhatSync remains the only writer of the formatted WhatsApp timeline. This keeps custom power without rebuilding the sync itself.
