What OpenAI dots can do with your WhatsApp

Chats waiting on you

Every morning your dot checks who is waiting on a reply and sends you the list.

Follow-ups that don't slip

It checks a chat each day until the customer answers, then drafts the next step for you.

WhatsApp next to your other tools

A dot can use WhatSync with your other plugins, like turning orders from a group into rows in a sheet.

Add WhatSync to OpenAI dots

You sign in to WhatSync once. No API keys to paste. Check what you need above first.

  1. Add WhatSync to ChatGPT

On ChatGPT Plugins, select the plus button, then Add custom MCP server. Name it WhatSync and paste the server URL. Already use WhatSync in ChatGPT? Skip this: your dot uses the same plugins.

    https://whatsync.app/api/mcp
  2. Sign in and install

Choose OAuth, sign in to WhatSync with Google or your email, select Create as a plugin, then install it and keep it turned on.

  3. Link your WhatsApp

Open your WhatSync dashboard and link your personal WhatsApp from Linked devices on your phone, or connect the WhatsApp Business API. If you ask your agent something first, it replies with a sign-in link that works for 15 minutes.

  4. Choose what it can see

On the What's saved page, enable message saving, pick the groups to include and keep any person out. Groups stay off until you tick them. Your agent sees messages saved from the moment you turn saving on, not your whole WhatsApp history.

  5. Give your dot the job

Open your dot in ChatGPT and tell it what to look after, like a morning list of chats waiting on you. Ask it to show you drafts before anything is sent.

Things to ask OpenAI dots

Copy one, change the names, and try it.

  • Every weekday at 9, use WhatSync and send me a list of WhatsApp chats waiting on my reply.

  • Check the Orders group each evening and add any new orders to my sheet.

  • Until Rahul replies about the quote, check our WhatsApp chat each morning. When he does, draft a reply for me to approve.

Good to know

You choose which chats are saved, and you can unlink WhatsApp from your phone at any time. How we handle your data.

  • OpenAI says a dot can use the supported plugins installed and enabled on your account. It doesn't list which custom plugins count, and we haven't tested WhatSync inside a dot yet. If your dot can't see WhatSync, use it in a normal ChatGPT chat.
  • A dot decides for each action whether it can go ahead or needs your approval. Tell it to show you drafts first, and check its Activity after the first few runs.
  • Sends are real WhatsApp messages. Set the send tool to ask you every time in your AI app's settings. Telling the agent "ask me first" in a chat is not the same thing.
  • Messaging many customers? Use the Business API, and only message people who agreed to hear from you. Bulk messages from a personal number can get it restricted by WhatsApp.
  • Search looks at message text, file names and captions. It does not read inside documents or images, or transcribe voice notes.
  • Groups only work on a personal WhatsApp linked from your phone. The Business API covers customer chats, templates and campaigns.
  • "Waiting on you" means the last message in a chat came from the other person. It's a hint to check, not a to-do list.

Personal WhatsApp or the Business API

OpenAI dots can tell which one you have and uses the right tools for it.

Questions

Something else? Ask us.

What are OpenAI dots?

Dots are always-on agents in ChatGPT that OpenAI launched in September 2026. Each one has its own computer in the cloud, so it keeps working while your computer is off. People also call them ChatGPT dots.

Do I need to add WhatSync again for my dot?

No. If WhatSync is already installed as a plugin on your ChatGPT account, your dot can use it.

Can my dot reply on WhatsApp for me?

Yes, if you gave WhatSync sending access. Sends are real messages, so ask your dot for drafts and approve each one.

Can I talk to my dot on WhatsApp?

Not through OpenAI right now. You reach a dot in ChatGPT, Slack, Teams or by phone call. WhatSync works the other way round: it gives your dot your WhatsApp chats to work with.

Do I need to install anything?

Not for WhatSync. We run the server for you. You only need the AI app itself. Your WhatsApp keeps working on your phone as normal.

Does it work with the WhatsApp Business API?

Yes. Connect a number through Meta and OpenAI dots can check and create templates, send approved templates, and run campaigns to customers who opted in. Meta reviews every template and charges per message, depending on the country and message type. See WhatsApp Business API.

Is WhatSync made by OpenAI?

No. WhatSync is made by Appstronauts. It is not made by, affiliated with or endorsed by OpenAI, WhatsApp or Meta.

How much does it cost?

See the pricing page for the current plans.
