OpenClaw WhatsApp setup, and when you want a WhatsApp MCP instead

How OpenClaw's WhatsApp channel works, the commands to link it, the settings that keep strangers out, and why it is a different job from letting Claude or ChatGPT work through your own WhatsApp chats.

The quick answer

Use OpenClaw's built-in WhatsApp channel when you want to text your own AI agent from your phone, ideally on a spare number. Use a WhatsApp MCP server when you want Claude, ChatGPT or OpenClaw itself to read, search and reply in your real WhatsApp chats.

How OpenClaw connects to WhatsApp

OpenClaw links WhatsApp the same way WhatsApp Web does. It uses the Baileys library to act as a linked device, and its gateway keeps that connection open. There is no Meta developer account involved and no Business API.

Once linked, messages sent to that number from people you allow reach your agent, and the agent's replies go back as WhatsApp messages. The session is saved under ~/.openclaw/credentials/whatsapp/, so you only scan the QR code again if you log the device out from your phone or the session expires.

Setting it up

OpenClaw's docs give three steps. Add the channel with "openclaw channels add --channel whatsapp". Link it with "openclaw channels login --channel whatsapp", which shows a QR code in your terminal; on the phone with the number you want to use, open WhatsApp, go to Linked devices, tap Link a device and scan it. Then start the gateway with "openclaw gateway".

Before you start the gateway, set who may talk to the agent. The WhatsApp block in your config takes a dmPolicy and an allowFrom list of numbers in international format, like +15551234567. The default policy, pairing, asks you to approve unknown senders. Allowlist only admits the numbers you list. Groups have their own policy and allow list, and by default the agent only answers in a group when it is mentioned.

Use a spare number

OpenClaw's docs recommend a dedicated number. If you link your main WhatsApp, the agent acts as you, and messages to yourself get confusing. A cheap second SIM or a WhatsApp Business app number on another phone works well.

Common problems

  • The agent stops replying: the gateway is not running. Replies only work while it is connected, so run it on a machine that stays on.
  • Messages from a friend are ignored: their number is not in allowFrom, or it is not in +country code format.
  • The agent ignores a group: groups need their own allow list, and the agent waits to be mentioned unless you turn that off.
  • You have to scan again: the device was removed from Linked devices on the phone, or WhatsApp logged it out because the phone was offline too long. WhatsApp allows up to four linked devices per number.

Texting your agent is not the same as your agent using your WhatsApp

A lot of people set up OpenClaw's WhatsApp channel hoping the agent will help with their own chats: catch up on groups, find what a client said, reply to people. The channel is not built for that. It turns WhatsApp into a chat window for the agent; it does not give the agent your inbox.

For that job you want a WhatsApp MCP server linked to your own number. It gives an AI app tools to list your chats, search every message, find chats waiting for your reply and send replies you approve. WhatSync is a hosted one that works in Claude and ChatGPT with no install. OpenClaw can also use remote MCP servers, so you can give your OpenClaw agent the same tools; see its MCP docs for the commands.

Questions

Does OpenClaw use the WhatsApp Business API?
No. Its WhatsApp channel links a number as a device, like WhatsApp Web, using the Baileys library. No Meta developer account is needed.
Can I use my personal WhatsApp number with OpenClaw?
OpenClaw supports it, but its docs recommend a separate number. With your main number linked, the agent acts as you and can send from your real account.
Can OpenClaw read my existing WhatsApp chats?
The channel is built for new messages sent to the agent, not for searching your history. To let an AI work through your existing chats, use a WhatsApp MCP server such as WhatSync.
Why did my OpenClaw WhatsApp stop working?
Usually the gateway stopped, or the linked device was logged out. Start the gateway again, and if it asks, run the login command and scan a new QR code.
Can I get banned for using OpenClaw on WhatsApp?
Normal one-to-one chats with your own agent look like WhatsApp Web use. Sending bulk or unsolicited messages from the linked number breaks WhatsApp's rules and can get it restricted.
