The quick answer
347 unread messages. You have five minutes. What do you do?
Pick your problem:
- Find them: tap Unread at the top of the Chats list.
- Clear them: mark one chat read with a swipe or long-press, or all of them from the menu.
- Read without blue ticks: turn off Read receipts in Settings, Privacy. It works both ways.
- Get the gist without reading: ask Claude, ChatGPT or any AI agent with WhatSync: "catch me up since this morning".
See only your unread chats
WhatsApp has filters above the chat list: All, Unread, Groups and Favorites. Tap Unread and you see only chats with new messages, plus the ones you marked as unread.
Tap All to go back. If you do not see the filters, update WhatsApp.
Mark a chat as read or unread
Marking a chat unread is a reminder to come back to it. It puts the green dot back without changing anything for the other person.
- On iPhone, swipe right on the chat and tap Unread, or Read.
- On Android, touch and hold the chat, tap the three dots at the top, then Mark as unread, or Mark as read.
- On WhatsApp Web or desktop, hover over the chat, open the little arrow, and pick Mark as unread.
Mark every chat as read
Back from holiday with 40 chats lit up? Clear them in one go.
- On iPhone, on the Chats screen tap the three dots (or Edit) at the top, then Read All.
- On Android, tap the three dots at the top of the Chats screen and look for Mark all as read. If your version does not have it, touch and hold one chat, tap the others to select them, then tap the three dots and Mark as read.
Careful
Marking a chat read does not send blue ticks, but it does hide what you skipped. Use the Unread filter first if anything might need an answer.
Read messages without blue ticks
Go to Settings, Privacy and turn off Read receipts. People can no longer see when you read their messages in one-to-one chats.
It works both ways: you stop seeing their blue ticks too. Groups still show who read a message, and voice notes still show when you played them.
The unread badge will not go away
The app icon says 3, but every chat looks read. The unread messages are hiding somewhere:
- Archived chats. Scroll to the top of the Chats list and open Archived.
- Locked chats. Pull down on the Chats list to open Locked chats.
- Muted groups and Communities. Use the Unread filter to find them.
- Still stuck? Mark all as read, then update WhatsApp and restart your phone.
Catch up on hundreds of messages without reading them
Reading 347 messages takes 20 minutes. Most of them do not need you.
WhatsApp has its own summaries of unread messages, made by Meta AI. They are off by default, still rolling out by country, and cover one chat at a time.

Good to know
WhatSync reads messages saved after you link, in the chats and groups you choose. It does not read your history from before, and groups stay off until you tick them.

- How do I see only unread messages on WhatsApp?
- Tap the Unread filter above your chat list. It shows chats with new messages and chats you marked as unread.
- How do I mark all WhatsApp chats as read?
- On iPhone, tap the three dots or Edit on the Chats screen, then Read All. On Android, use Mark all as read in the three-dot menu, or select the chats and mark them read.
- Does marking a chat as unread tell the other person?
- No. It only changes the dot on your own phone. The blue ticks they already saw stay.
- Can I read WhatsApp messages without the sender knowing?
- Turn off Read receipts in Settings, Privacy. Then one-to-one chats show no blue ticks, but you also stop seeing other people's. Groups always show read receipts.
- Why does WhatsApp show unread messages when there are none?
- Usually they are in Archived chats, Locked chats, or a muted group. Check those, then mark all as read.
- Can AI summarize my unread WhatsApp messages?
