Why tag WhatsApp links

WhatsApp does not tell websites where a visit came from. Without tags, people who tap your link in a chat usually show up as direct traffic, mixed in with everyone who typed your address.

UTM tags are small labels added to the end of the link. Google Analytics, and most other analytics tools, read them and report the visit under the source, medium and campaign you chose.

Names that stay tidy

Keep the source as whatsapp for every link you share there, so all WhatsApp visits add up in one row.
Use the medium for the place: chat, group, status, broadcast or business-api.
Lowercase with hyphens. Analytics treats Diwali Sale and diwali-sale as two campaigns. The tool fixes this for you.
Use content to compare versions, like button-v1 and button-v2.
Tag your own pages only. UTM tags on a wa.me link do nothing, because WhatsApp opens the chat instead of a web page.

What does UTM stand for?

Urchin Tracking Module, after the analytics company Google bought to build Google Analytics. The tags are a standard that almost every analytics tool reads.

Where do I see the visits in Google Analytics 4?

Go to Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and set the table to Session source / medium or Session campaign.

Which tags are required?

Source, medium and campaign. Content and term are optional.

Can I tag a wa.me link?

No. A wa.me link opens a WhatsApp chat, not a web page, so there is nothing to read the tags. Tag the pages you share inside WhatsApp instead.

Will the tags change my page?

No. The page loads the same. The tags only add information for your analytics tool.
