WhatsApp voice note to text

Turn WhatsApp voice messages into text you can read, copy and search. Drop in one voice note or a whole chat export. It works in your browser, so your recordings are never uploaded.

Your voice notes

High is better with accents, noise and languages other than English, but downloads more the first time.

Drop voice notes here (.opus, .ogg, .m4a, .mp3), or a chat exported with media as a .zip to do every voice note in it. Nothing is uploaded.

Text

The text of each voice note shows up here, ready to copy.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Save the voice note

Share or export it from WhatsApp. A chat exported with media gives you every voice note at once.

  2. 2

    Drop it here

Pick the language, or let it detect the language for you. Choose English to translate as well.

  3. 3

    Copy the text

Each voice note gets its own text. Copy one, or download them all as a text file.

How to save a WhatsApp voice note

On iPhone

  1. Touch and hold the voice message, then tap Forward.
  2. Tap the share button at the bottom right and choose Save to Files.
  3. Open this page in Chrome on your phone, or move the file to your computer.

On Android

  1. Touch and hold the voice message, then tap the share button.
  2. Save it to your files, or send it to yourself by email.
  3. Voice notes you received are also in your phone storage, in the WhatsApp Media folder under WhatsApp Voice Notes, as .opus files.

Every voice note in a chat

Open the chat, tap its name, then Export Chat (on Android: the three dots, More, Export chat) and choose to include media. Drop the .zip file here and every voice note in it is turned into text, in order. Our chat viewer opens the same file to read the whole conversation.

Can WhatsApp transcribe voice messages itself?

Yes, for one message at a time and in some languages. Turn it on in WhatsApp under Settings, Chats, Voice message transcripts, then touch and hold a voice message and tap Transcribe. On iPhone it needs Siri turned on. On Android it has fewer languages.

Use this tool when your language is not there, when you want the text in English, or when you have a whole chat of voice notes to turn into text at once.

Private by design

The speech model runs in your browser. The first time you use it, your browser downloads it (about 77 MB, or 250 MB for High accuracy) and keeps it for next time. Your voice notes are turned into text on your own device and are never sent to us or anyone else.

It uses Whisper, an open speech model that understands about 100 languages. It is very good with clear speech and makes more mistakes with background noise, strong accents or several people talking, so check names and numbers before you rely on them.

Is this WhatsApp voice to text tool free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit on how many voice notes you turn into text.

Which files work?

WhatsApp voice notes (.opus or .ogg), plus .m4a, .mp3, .aac and .wav recordings. You can also drop a chat exported with media as a .zip file to do every voice note in it.

Are my voice notes uploaded?

No. The text is made in your browser. Only the speech model is downloaded, once, and your recordings never leave your device.

Can it translate a voice note to English?

Yes. Under Text in, choose English and a voice note in any supported language comes out as English text.

Which languages does it understand?

About 100, including English, Portuguese, Spanish, Hindi, Arabic, Hebrew, French, German, Indonesian and Turkish. Leave the language on Detect automatically, or pick it to get better results on short notes.

Why does it not work on my iPhone?

Some versions of Safari cannot open WhatsApp's .opus voice notes. Open this page in Chrome on your phone, or use a computer.

How long does it take?

The first time, the speech model downloads, which takes a minute or so on a good connection. After that a one-minute voice note usually takes a few seconds on a computer and longer on a phone.
