How to export a WhatsApp chat

On iPhone

Open the chat and tap the contact or group name at the top.
Scroll down and tap Export Chat.
Choose Attach Media to include photos and voice notes, or Without Media for text only.
Save the .zip file to Files, or send it to your computer.

On Android

Open the chat and tap the three dots at the top right.
Tap More, then Export chat.
Choose Include media or Without media.
Save or send the file to wherever you will open it.

WhatsApp limits how many messages and how much media go into one export, so very long chats may be cut short.

Want a summary of the conversation?

This viewer helps you read and filter an export; it does not send the chat to an AI or generate a summary. To turn a chat into decisions, tasks and unanswered questions, follow our WhatsApp group summary guide. It includes a fictional chat you can try and a prompt that asks for source messages.

Check which dates the export includes before summarizing it. An answer based on a partial file cannot tell you what happened in messages outside that file.

Private by design

The viewer runs in your browser. The chat, and any photos or voice notes in it, are read on your device and are never uploaded. Close the tab and they are gone.

Which files can I open?

The .txt file or the .zip file WhatsApp makes when you export a chat, from iPhone or Android, in any language or date format. You can also paste the text.

Why do photos not show up?

They show only when the chat was exported with media and you open the .zip file. A text-only export lists each photo as omitted.

Are my chats uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens in your browser, so your messages and files stay on your device.

How is the reply time worked out?

Each time someone answers after another person wrote, the gap counts as a reply. The viewer shows the middle value for each person and skips gaps over 12 hours, like overnight.

Can I turn a chat into a spreadsheet?

Yes. Download CSV gives one row per message with the time, the sender and the text, ready for Excel or Google Sheets.

Can I view a group chat?

Yes. Each person gets their own color, and you can filter to one person's messages.
