WhatsApp for VS Code

Copilot's agent mode can use WhatsApp tools. Read the client's message, fix the code, send the update.

How do you connect WhatsApp to VS Code?

Click Install in VS Code, or run MCP: Add Server and enter the WhatSync HTTP URL. For new setups, VS Code recommends the portable .mcp.json or Copilot Global destination. Complete OAuth sign-in, then link WhatsApp from the dashboard. The older .vscode/mcp.json format remains supported for compatibility.

What VS Code can do with your WhatsApp

Context from the chat

Agent mode reads what the user said before it starts on the fix.

Updates without switching apps

Draft the WhatsApp update to the team from the editor.

Template work

Create and check WhatsApp Business templates while you build the feature that sends them.

Add WhatSync to VS Code

You sign in to WhatSync once. No API keys to paste. Check what you need above first.

  1. Add the server

    Click Install in VS Code above, or run MCP: Add Server from the Command Palette, choose HTTP and paste the URL. Prefer the portable .mcp.json or Copilot Global destination in the guided flow. If you already use the compatible .vscode/mcp.json format, its entry looks like this:

    {
      "servers": {
        "whatsync": { "type": "http", "url": "https://whatsync.app/api/mcp" }
      }
    }
  2. Sign in

    Start the server from VS Code's MCP server controls and complete OAuth sign-in when prompted. Then enable the WhatSync tools in Copilot Chat.

  3. Link your WhatsApp

    Open your WhatSync dashboard and link your personal WhatsApp from Linked devices on your phone, or connect the WhatsApp Business API. If you ask your agent something first, it replies with a sign-in link that works for 15 minutes.

  4. Choose what it can see

    On the What's saved page, enable message saving, pick the groups to include and keep any person out. Groups stay off until you tick them. The agent can read permitted messages saved since you enabled saving; linking does not import your entire WhatsApp history.

Things to ask VS Code

Copy one, change the names, and try it.

  • Use WhatSync. What did the client say about the invoice export in the Acme group?

  • Turn the bug reports in the Support group from this week into GitHub issues.

  • Draft a WhatsApp to the QA group that build 214 is ready. Do not send.

Good to know

You choose which chats are saved, and you can unlink WhatsApp from your phone at any time. How we handle your data.

  • If your company uses Copilot Business or Enterprise, an admin must allow MCP servers.
  • Use Copilot Global for a personal setup, or share a URL-only workspace config so each teammate can sign in separately.
  • Sends are real WhatsApp messages and run when your AI app allows the tool call. Keep send tools on manual approval and review the recipient and text. Asking the agent to wait is not an enforced approval setting.
  • Use the Business API for campaigns to customers who opted in. The Business API does not permit unsolicited messages. Linked personal accounts can be restricted for violating WhatsApp's rules.
  • Search covers saved message text, file names and captions. WhatSync does not index document contents, transcribe voice notes or read text inside images. A download link is available only when WhatSync saved the file.
  • Group searches and replies require a linked personal WhatsApp. WhatsApp Business API tools work with customer conversations, templates and campaigns.
  • An unanswered conversation means its latest saved message in the checked period is incoming. It is a follow-up signal, not proof that a question is unanswered or that you owe a reply.

Personal WhatsApp or the Business API

VS Code can tell which one you have and uses the right tools for it.

Questions

Something else? Ask us.

Does GitHub Copilot support remote MCP servers?

Yes, in agent mode. VS Code supports http servers with OAuth sign-in.

Should I commit .vscode/mcp.json?

You can share a URL-only MCP config; do not include tokens or secrets. Each teammate signs in separately. For new setups, VS Code recommends a portable .mcp.json file instead of the older .vscode/mcp.json destination.

Do I need to install anything?

Not for WhatSync. We run the server for you. You only need the AI app itself. Your WhatsApp keeps working on your phone as normal.

Does it work with the WhatsApp Business API?

Yes. Connect a number through Meta and VS Code can check and create templates, send approved templates, and run campaigns to customers who opted in. Meta reviews every template and charges per message, depending on the country and message type. See WhatsApp Business API.

Is WhatSync made by Microsoft and GitHub?

No. WhatSync is made by Appstronauts. It is not made by, affiliated with or endorsed by Microsoft and GitHub, WhatsApp or Meta.

How much does it cost?

See the pricing page for the current plans.
