WhatsApp for Windsurf

Add WhatSync to legacy Cascade and use saved WhatsApp messages while you code. Current Windsurf docs redirect to Devin Desktop, which has a different default agent and config path.

How do you connect WhatsApp to Windsurf?

For legacy Cascade, open the panel's Actions menu, then Open MCP config file. Add WhatSync under mcpServers with serverUrl. Current Devin Desktop docs place this file at ~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json on macOS and Linux. Devin Local uses separate CLI config; do not use this Cascade file for it.

What Windsurf can do with your WhatsApp

Fix what users report

Cascade reads the user's message and starts from their words.

Status updates

Draft the team update when the change lands, and approve it before it goes.

Add WhatSync to Windsurf

You sign in to WhatSync once. No API keys to paste. Check what you need above first.

  1. Add the server

    In Cascade's Actions menu, choose Open MCP config file and merge this into mcpServers. Current docs use ~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json on macOS/Linux or %APPDATA%\devin\mcp_config.json on Windows. Use the file your editor opens if an older Windsurf version uses a different location. Both serverUrl and url are supported.

    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "whatsync": { "serverUrl": "https://whatsync.app/api/mcp" }
      }
    }
  2. Load the server and sign in

    Save the file, enable WhatSync in Cascade's MCPs section and complete OAuth sign-in when prompted. Reload the server if your editor requires it.

  3. Link your WhatsApp

    Open your WhatSync dashboard and link your personal WhatsApp from Linked devices on your phone, or connect the WhatsApp Business API. If you ask your agent something first, it replies with a sign-in link that works for 15 minutes.

  4. Choose what it can see

    On the What's saved page, enable message saving, pick the groups to include and keep any person out. Groups stay off until you tick them. The agent can read permitted messages saved since you enabled saving; linking does not import your entire WhatsApp history.

Things to ask Windsurf

Copy one, change the names, and try it.

  • Use WhatSync to read the last messages in the Support group and list the bugs.

  • Find what Dev said about the payment webhook and check our handler.

  • Draft a WhatsApp to Dev saying the webhook fix is deployed. Show it to me first.

Good to know

You choose which chats are saved, and you can unlink WhatsApp from your phone at any time. How we handle your data.

  • These instructions cover legacy Cascade. The current default Devin Local agent uses Devin CLI configuration instead.
  • On teams with an MCP allow list, an admin must add WhatSync to it.
  • Sends are real WhatsApp messages and run when your AI app allows the tool call. Keep send tools on manual approval and review the recipient and text. Asking the agent to wait is not an enforced approval setting.
  • Use the Business API for campaigns to customers who opted in. The Business API does not permit unsolicited messages. Linked personal accounts can be restricted for violating WhatsApp's rules.
  • Search covers saved message text, file names and captions. WhatSync does not index document contents, transcribe voice notes or read text inside images. A download link is available only when WhatSync saved the file.
  • Group searches and replies require a linked personal WhatsApp. WhatsApp Business API tools work with customer conversations, templates and campaigns.
  • An unanswered conversation means its latest saved message in the checked period is incoming. It is a follow-up signal, not proof that a question is unanswered or that you owe a reply.

Questions

Something else? Ask us.

Why does Windsurf not see the server?

Check which agent you are using and open its own MCP config. For legacy Cascade, merge valid JSON under mcpServers and enable the server. Both serverUrl and url are accepted. Devin Local reads different config files.

Do I need to install anything?

Not for WhatSync. We run the server for you. You only need the AI app itself. Your WhatsApp keeps working on your phone as normal.

Does it work with the WhatsApp Business API?

Yes. Connect a number through Meta and Windsurf can check and create templates, send approved templates, and run campaigns to customers who opted in. Meta reviews every template and charges per message, depending on the country and message type. See WhatsApp Business API.

Is WhatSync made by Cognition?

No. WhatSync is made by Appstronauts. It is not made by, affiliated with or endorsed by Cognition, WhatsApp or Meta.

How much does it cost?

See the pricing page for the current plans.
